Hints of winter

6/10/2018

The last couple of nights it's been cold, hovering around zero, and you know, the cooler weather has gotten me excited.  So excited in fact, I went out and bought myself a new winter hat, or a toque, as us Canadians supposedly say.  As an aside, I don't think I've ever used that word in my life to refer to a winter hat, but I digress.

My excitement about the coming winter has me fondly daydreaming about skating, gliding along the Rideau Canal or some such place, hand in hand with my sweetie, pausing now and then to warm ourselves with some hot chocolate.  I haven't been on skates in years, but they say it's like riding a bike and that the ability never really goes away.

I haven't ran out and bought skates, but the feeling did inspire this piece.  I call it Ice Shadows.  I'm very pleased with how it turned out.  I particularly like the abstract background, shimmering lights against the city, the perfect backdrop to an open air rink.  People skating, basking in the glow, or walking along the adjacent snow-covered walk, enjoying the sights.  I can smell the hints of nutmeg and cinnamon in the air as I look at it.  It makes me smile, well, smile and crave hot chocolate.

Mr. Parker,

Greetings from across the pond! I've been following your work for quite some time now and have just now finally found time to drop you a quick note.

I adore your work and as a lifelong student of the arts (I hold an MA in Art History), I find your style intriguing. Rather, I should say your mix of styles. Your description of your work on your front page is spot on; you do somehow manage to incorporate the various major movements into something uniquely your own. In fact, I've taken the liberty of using this piece to provide my A Level Arts class an example of the evolution of art throughout the years, nd quite frankly, as something I've not seen before. I hope you don't take offence and see this as the compliment it's meant to be.

In any event, I do hope you'll someday be showing your work in the U.K. as I would love to see it in person.

Cheers,

Vivian

What lovely comments! Thank you, Vivian. I do hope to someday exhibit in the UK. I have shown my work in Europe, but not there as of yet. I'm honoured that you thought so much of my work that you showed it to your students. My wife just came up with a term to describe my style, the incorporating of different styles. I'm not telling yet, but I'm sure it will be in an upcoming blog post. ;)
