Well, it's way, way too early on a Sunday morning and I was woken in a rudely unceremonious way.... the fire alarm in my building went off. Thankfully there was no fire, just your standard resident breakfast mishap. Ah, life in the big city. Since I'm up, I figure, I might as well be productive so I'm answering yet another question I am often asked; if I wasn't an artist what would I be? Well, my initial response is "under a bridge"? Joking aside, it's an interesting question. Goodness knows I've tried everything. And when I say everything, I mean literally pretty much everything, including the military (yes, ol' Carl was a man in uniform for a brief period of time, calm down ladies, I know, I know.... tee hee hee), cashier, waiter, dishwasher, cook, construction labourer, sand blaster, undercoating technician, janitor, security guard, price marker, paper boy (when I was very young), bellhop, sales, call centre agent (that one, I did 5 different and horrible times) and the list goes on. You name it, I tried it. And as you can see, nothing stuck. None of them were my "calling" so to speak.
Art, however, was my calling. And it had been calling me since I was that little boy drawing Spider-Man and muscle men on the chalk board at school. If I didn't have that.... well, I suppose I'd have to do something that gives me some of what art does, something that touches people's souls, that makes them feel, something that I can have fun with and allows me to express myself. It's something that, like drawing and painting, I've always done here and there, from time to time, for fun...............it's ta da...........singing! See for yourself:
So that answers the question, and you know the best part, I can have both. I have my painting AND although I'll never sing professionally, I can still belt out a tune here and there for fun, heck, I can even sing while I paint. Now It's your turn, if you weren't doing what you're doing, what would you be doing? It's okay, you can tell me, I won't tell. ;)
